Collection and Use of Information:

Registration

Some of the activities and resources on the newsliteracy.ca website require registration to access. This information is collected so we may keep track of how many educators are using our materials, and to provide support or communicate with registrants in relation to the tools and resources on the site.

  • This information is only used internally, and never shared with or sold to third parties.
  • The information collected during the registration process includes: email address, school details, grades and subjects taught, interest in learning themes, and previous involvement with CIVIX.

Student Information

Newsliteracy.ca doesn’t collect any student personal information, or require the use of identifying information. Some newsliteracy.ca activities require students to visit a class page to access the required materials. Viewing the activities requires inputting an identifier, but the type of identifier is left to the discretion of the teacher. This may be a first name, initials, numeric code, or other ID.

These unique identifiers are used to display class play metrics to teachers using the site’s Teacher Dashboard. CIVIX has access to aggregate data resulting from activity use, but not the unique identifiers associated with each student play.

The public version of the FakeOut game requires participants to input age and location, information which is used in aggregate to better understand user demographics.

Safeguarding and Retention of Personal Information

We have implemented administrative, technical and physical measures to safeguard the personal information in our custody and control against theft, loss and unauthorized access, use, modification and disclosure. We restrict access to your personal information on a need-to-know basis to employees and authorized service providers who require access to fulfill their job requirements.
