1. Introduction: Why Verify?

Our online information environment is polluted with false and misleading information. Because we rely on the internet to stay informed, the ability to evaluate information has become an essential skill of citizenship.

2. Investigate the Source

It’s not always clear where information is coming from or if it can be trusted. Step one is to identify the source, and evaluate its reputation. Are you looking at a professional news source? An agenda based group, or something else?

3. Check the Claim

Often we just want to know if something we’ve heard or read is reliable information. The skills in this section help us get to the heart of a matter by asking, ‘is this accurate?’ ‘can I verify it?’ and ‘what are other sources saying?’

4. Trace the Information

Much of the information we see online isn’t original. It’s been copied from somewhere, re-written, or reconfigured. ‘Trace’ skills are about finding the original source to get as accurate a picture as possible.
